Sustainability: Outside the Box

Three Boone entrepreneurs are cracking the lid on container eco-homes

In port cities rimming the united states, retired shipping containers are accumulating by the hundreds of thousands. It isn’t difficult to imagine them filled with myriad goods—from refrigerators and sneakers to PlayStations and exotic foods. But it’s much more challenging to envision what it would be like to make a home inside these enormous steel receptacles.

A new architectural movement has formed in the last decade to find a use for these stockpiled boxes, which are designed to withstand huge payloads of cargo and the extreme conditions of transoceanic and highway travel. DwellBox, a company in Boone, is working to get in on the ground floor as the first company in North Carolina using these containers to construct affordable, eco-friendly houses.

Ethan Anderson, Casey Pond, and Jeffrey Scott founded DwellBox in 2008. The company buys used containers from shipping companies and employs them as frames for new houses, providing a sturdier, more durable alternative to conventional wood frames. “We think of them as adult LEGOs,” says Anderson. “They’re just big building blocks, and we can configure them any way you want, except round. We don’t do round.”

Wow! It has been quite a whirlwind over the last week or so with so much change happening every day it is really tough to keep up with this blogging format. We are shooting for a final inspection Friday or Monday, and things are looking on track. There have been 10 plus people in the house daily, all working around each other, but things are getting done, and the homeowner is super excited to see everything taking shape around her tastes. Paint colors, light fixtures, cabinetry, etc. all really echo the vision of the owner at the end of the day. Here are a few shots of the hustle and bustle going on today, but one can really see how colors can make a huge difference in the feel of Tad Asana even at this close to complete phase….stay tuned!

Exterior trim will be done today, sheetrock will be ready for paint on Friday, rooftop deck will be built by Friday. Our very excited client is looking to move in around Aug. 23. While we are very happy to be finishing up the Tad Asana, there will be no rest for the weary. DwellBox will be moving right into production of a mobile learning lab for Caldwell Community College. This lab will be a teaching platform for renewable energy systems, green products, etc. Stay tuned for this one!

Well, the time finally arrived. Insulators completed most of the Icynene installation yesterday. Painters have made serious headway as well. If all continues to move at this pace, sheetrock will start going up on Monday.

big window is ready to go in.....

As usual, there has been a great deal of activity onsite, but unfortunately for you blog folks, not a great deal of visible change, hence not a lot of photo action. If it weren’t raining today, 1. I would be onsite, not in here writing this now, and 2. the painters would have been able to start. Not three minutes after they arrived this morning, RAIN……so, I guess we are going to try tomorrow. All welding which would have affected insulation is complete, so finally, it appears that insulation will be ready very shortly. The roof is on, and final trim on the exterior will be done by weeks end. ( barring more monsoon weather!) I will attempt to be more timely in my updates, especially since I am predicting a significant change in appearance on Tad Asana in the next 2 weeks.
